Lava Iris Fuel 60 review

Lava Iris Fuel 60 review

If a smartphone has the same battery level even four days after you charged it last then there is something seriously right with it. The Lava Iris Fuel 60 is that kind of phone. No, I did not use it as my primary phone in the said period, but it had a SIM and was connected to the Wi-Fi, used occasionally to check mail and watch videos. So how does the Iris Fuel 60 manage this? Well, that must be the 4000 mAh battery at work.
Specs: 5-inch HD IPS (720 x 1280p ~ 320 DPI) DISPLAY | 1.3 GHz Quad Core MediaTek MT6582 processor | 1GB RAM | 8GB internal storage, up to 32 GB external | 10MP front with 2MP rear | 4000 mAh battery | Android Kitkat 4.4
Price: Rs 8,888
Design: The phone has a 4000 mAh battery and that pretty much takes care of the design. Yes, the phone is large, heavy and bricky… more like a portable power pack than a phone. But it is a very practical design and has a rear flap that looks smart. User will have to get used to both the power and volume buttons being on the right side.
Display: The Fuel 60 has a HD IPS display at 320 dpi, which is quite good for the price range. The screen has good viewing angles and you will not have any issues with this display.
Performance: The Fuel 60 solves a great pain point with the battery and that is the primary intention of this phone. Otherwise it is a regular mid-range phone. So don’t expect wonders from the phone when it comes to performance. It will not disappoint you with day to day activity. It thankfully does not heat up and that is a good thing considering its bulk.
Software: The software is almost stock Android. Thankfully there is no unnecessary bloatware in the phone and that is good coming from an Indian manufacturer.
Camera: The 10MP rear camera is jsut about okay giving you decent photographs in good light and looking a bit lost in low light. Like in other Lava phones you can click by waving your hand before the front camera. But with the touch to focus option on the screen it becomes a bit difficult to access the other settings. The front camera is okay for video calls.
Storage: The phone gives you under 5GB from the 8GB storage so you will need to buy a SD card right away.
Battery: This is the biggest selling point of the phone and I think a lot of people will buy this phone just for this features. A lot of us are not bothered so much about the other features, they just need the phone to last the entire day, or more. With this phone, the battery will last two full days with regular use and much more if you use is sparingly or as a backup phone. What a full HD movie and the battery would have come down under 10 per cent.
Verdict: The Lava Iris Fuel 60 is a decent Android phone with an amazing battery. You will buy this phone because you need a phone with a battery that goes on like the Duracell bunny. That is clearly the selling point of this phone.

Xiaomi cleared of data-privacy breach charges by Taiwanese regulators

Xiaomi cleared of data-privacy breach charges by Taiwanese regulators

Taiwanese regulators cleared on China’s Xiaomi and other smartphone brands of breaching local data protection laws after national security concerns triggered the government to launch a probe in September.
The National Communications Commission, in a report concluding the investigation, said all the 12 brands it had tested, which include handsets sold by Apple, Samsung, LG and Sony, did not violate the laws.
James Lou, an NCC official who was involved in the testing, said the commission, however, would request mobile phone makers make information transmission more secure.
The probe, which also involved Chinese handset makers Huawei and ZTE, was a reminder of the scrutiny Chinese technology firms are subject to abroad as governments become increasingly wary of potential cyber security threats from the world’s second-biggest economy.
It also highlights Taiwan’s sensitivity to security issues involving China, its largest trading partner but one which has never renounced the use of force to take back what it deems a renegade province.
Privately owned Xiaomi, whose budget smartphones are popular throughout Asia, was previously accused of breaching data privacy. In August, the company apologized and said it would change a default feature after a Finnish security company said Xiaomi collected address book data without users’ permission.
In September, Taiwan’s government began performing independent tests on Xiaomi phones after media reports said that some models automatically send user data back to the firm’s servers in mainland China.
The probe was then widened to include local and foreign handsets. The NCC report said handsets made by local firms HTC, Asustek, Far EasTone Telecommunications, Taiwan Mobile and U.S.-based InFocus, whose handsets are made by Taiwan’s Hon Hai Precision, were also cleared of breaching the data protection laws.

Datsun Go+ to Renault Lodgy

Datsun Go+ to Renault Lodgy

A segment apart from the SUVs which has seen tremendous growth in the recent times is MPVs. The people carriers are now being widely accepted as family vehicles akin to station wagons in North America. The Ertiga was the first one in 2012 to bring about a huge change in the way people viewed compact MPVs, the Innova holding the candle for bigger iterations that is. Honda followed Maruti with the Mobilio in 2014. With these MPVs ruling the roost in the market as of now, more and more automakers are tempted to enter this segment. Here is a list of all the seven-seater personal passenger vehicles coming your way in the New Year.

Datsun Go+

This will be the first MPV to be launched in 2015. It is a Datsun Go with a bigger boot. The last row of seats, even the company says so, is good for only children or if you don't have one, extra luggage. There is one petrol engine on offer as of now, the same 68PS 1.2-litre motor with a five-speed manual transmission. Expect this MPV to be priced very competitively.

Maruti Ertiga facelift

The Ertiga has been in the market from nearly without a facelift and 2015 will be the time when the refreshed version will go on sale. There are spy shots on the Internet which suggest that the launch is imminent. The new Ertiga is expected to cost a tad more than the outgoing version and will continue with the same set of engines. There will be though an AMT on offer on the transmissions side.

Renault Lodgy

Renault's bread and butter model in the country is the Duster. The company has realised the potential of this car and is now introducing a MPV on the same platform. The Lodgy should be out in the market by February and will be the roomiest of the current crop of compact MPVs. Renault is said to have achieved more than 90 per cent localisation so expect the prices to similar to the Ertiga.

Toyota Innova facelift
Toyota has tasted great success with the Innova MPV however the Japanese company is not resting on its laurels. An all-new Innova on a new platform is being readied and TKM has already started testing the MPV in India. The new Innova is expected to be even more roomier and feature rich. Toyota will also be making airbags standard across all the variants. Expect the engine to be also more fuel efficient and powerful.

Maruti Wagon R-based MPV

We are kidding you not. There is a Wagon R-based seven seater in the works and from the look of it, it could be a success story for Maruti again. The interiors have been spruced up from the current Wagon R and the third row of seats have a tumble function. Expect the 1.0-litre K-Next engine to be under the hood and with a CNG/LPG alternative as well. There could also be Maruti's own diesel engine as well.

The year hasn’t been really great for tablets. The product category witnessed yet another sloppy year as the tablet sales continue to slump. The fall of the tablets hasn’t spared even the reigning iPad, which is expected to bear the brunt with its first-ever yearly decline in sales since the product category was announced.  Well, this hasn’t stopped the industry bigwigs from churning out some nifty tablets. This year we saw some really sleek and powerful tablets. Here’s a quick look at the ttop three tablets for the year 2014.
iPad Air 2 – Winner
iPad Air 2 still a better option
iPad Air 2 still a better option
Apple’s iPad Air 2 easily takes the top position on the dias when it comes to the best tablets of the year. This thinnest, lightest and newest iPad is almost 18 per cent thinner than the original iPad Air and just 6.1mm thin. The major update is the presence of the TouchID fingerprint scanner on the power button. Just like the iPhone 5S, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, it will now allow users to unlock their iPad and even shop securely using Apple Pay. Another major addition is the presence of an 8MP iSight camera, which brings in all the goodies such as time-lapse mode, live HDR, 120fps slo-mo mode, burst mode, panorama and more. There is an improved 1.2MP front facing camera as well. On the display front, the iPad Air 2 comes with a 9.7-inch 2048 x 1536 pixel display. The iPad Air 2 is powered by the Apple A8X system on chip which has a 64-bit architecture and comes with a dedicated M8 motion processor. Apple claims a 12x CPU performance jump and a whopping 180x GPU performance jump from the original iPad. Performance-wise, the device has received rave reviews from tech experts across the globe.
Samsung Tab S 8.4 – First Runner up
samsung_stab_002
In the bid to compete with the reigning iPad, Samsung also churned out some nifty tablets this year.  With the Galaxy Tab S 8.4 and 10.5, the company has pushed limits with the super-sharp display and ultra thin body. The chic-looking Tab S 8.4 with a dimpled rubber back and metallic rim, sports 2560×1600 resolution Super AMOLED screen that renders sharp images and text, and holds up well in bright outdoors, while optimizing the tablet’s battery use. After several attempts at dethroning the iPad, looks like Samsung has finally got it right with the Galaxy Tab S. With an excellent display, powerful processing and great speaker quality, there’s little going against the Galaxy Tab S. Read our complete review, to know how the tablet fares.
iPad mini 3 – Second Runner up
iPad_mini3
Quite close to the Tab S is Apple’s all-new iPad mini 3, which is a generational upgrade over the iPad mini with Retina Display. Though it carries forward most of the aspects from its previous iteration, the complete package places it among the top three tablets. The major update with the mini 3 is also the addition of the TouchID that eventually improves security. The iPad mini 3 is powered by the Apple A7 SoC and just like the iPad Air 2, will run on iOS 8.1. It also gets the 5MP iSight camera like the iPad mini 2.
Worthy Mentions
The recently launched Nexus 9 also deserves a worthy mention. Though a stretch away from bringing some stiff competition to the iPad, the Nexus 9 is a good option when considering the Android clan.  The HTC-built Google tablet sports an 8.9-inch IPS display with a 4:3 aspect ratio. It is the first tablet to run Android 5.0 Lollipop and comes powered by 64-bit Nvidia Tegra processor. Read what tech experts say about the Nexus 9.
